Ryan Kavanaugh – The Visionary Behind Relativity, The Creative Mind Behind Genius

Growing up, Ryan Kavanaugh found his calling in sports and the work of movie/TV industry agents. A true “hands-on” salesman, Kavanaugh focused on working for his clients, learning how the film industry worked and how best to exploit it for his own benefit. After earning his bachelor’s degree at Rutgers University and working in management in the entertainment industry for four years, Ryan Kavanaugh went back to Rutgers to obtain a law degree, followed by a degree in business administration from Fordham University. In the mid-1990s, Kavanaugh was a manager for R.J. Cutler’s company and later started his own agency. He started producing and directing television and films. In 2006, Kavanaugh created Onion Inc. to form Onion Studios.

Disrupting the industry

Ryan Kavanaugh’s interests in technology can be found throughout his career. He was instrumental in facilitating acquisitions and producing investment deals for a number of U.S. and international companies. In 2011, he was recruited to the video streaming service Hulu by CEO Jason Kilar. He quickly began reshaping the platform’s business model by focusing on enhanced content and was able to sell Hulu for an estimated $500 million in 2014.

Key Milestones in his career

Throughout his entrepreneurial journey, Ryan Kavanaugh has partnered with and invested in a variety of companies including HotWax Films, GoPro, Foursquare, Tinder, Tiki Brands, Twitter, and mobile games, including GameGaia, Thumbplay, Lyf, and Fling, among others. He is the founder of New Enterprise Associates and a board member at Catalyst, founded by Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA, and author of In Defense of Animals. Kavanaugh has also served as the head of the Entertainment Industry Council (EIC), one of the industry’s leading trade associations representing television, film, and digital content, from 2004-2007.
